How to abide by tint laws in Missouri

Three sports cars are parked in a parking lot in front of a building.

When you drive your car with the windows up, do you ever worry about whether drivers nearby can see inside your car? That is most likely due to window tint. But did you know there are laws for window tinting in Missouri?

A car's windshield blocks most of the ultraviolet rays from entering your vehicle, but if you’re driving on an extremely sunny day and your car's driver and passenger windows are tinted, there is a chance you could be put at risk for eye damage.

Window tinting is a great way to protect the car's interior from sun damage. However, if you want to tint your car windows in Missouri, it’s best to check with your local law enforcement first.

What Is The Window Tint Limit In Missouri?

There are states with strong window tinting laws and others with weaker or no laws at all. Missouri law for automotive glass does not allow aftermarket material that blocks 30% of light.

In Missouri, you can legally have a car window tint as dark as 70% VLT (visible light transmission). The legal limit varies between 30% and 50% in most other states. This puts MO in one of the least strict states for window tinting.

There are 5 different levels of darkness that can be measured for automotive window tint. The percentages on this car window tint chart are based on how much light is allowed through, with 100% being none and 0% being completely blacked out.

100 - 70 = A2

70 - 50 = A4

50 - 35 = A5

35 - 20 = A6

20- 0= A7

Some states look at this differently and allow darker tint percentages. For example, in California, the legal limit is 80% VLT for all non-commercial vehicles; however, if you’re driving a commercial vehicle (anything from trucks to buses), the legality of window tinting can vary based on annual limits or whether it endangers other people.

Find A Window Tinting Company That Abides By The Law

There are many options for window tinting in Missouri, and some people even decide to DIY their automotive window tinting themselves. However, it's best to leave this to a professional who can do a clean job and know what car window tint shades are legal.

At A&G Auto Spa, we take pride in providing the highest quality work on your vehicle while also being always compliant with the legal limits of our state.
